That is the way to do it with network-manager if you have it installed. Presumably the likes of ubuntu and all would include network-manager. Then again, not always will the OpenVPN plugin be installed for network-manager.

I also wouldn't personally cut and paste the certificate out of the .ovpn file as there probably is no harm in leaving a copy of the certificate in the .ovpn file. That is, instead of cutting and pasting you may as well copy and paste.
