VPN connection established - no IP change

Post by tntdynamight » Mon Jan 26, 2015 11:08 pm

Hi,

I wonder what I have to do to get my traffic route through the vpn connection, by linux command line utility only. I have established connection, but a simple test (using my cell phones hotspot), my ip on the client doesnt change when connected. I did get the android client to connect and change ip with SecureNat, but not the ubuntu client. Now I try to use the bridge and none work anymore, though both connect.
Below a short description, and below that more details about the system.

I pretty much followed this tutorial:
https://www.digitalocean.com/community/ ... -softether

But now I created a local bridge from the virtual hub to eth0. it is operating.

The Client says it connects:

Incoming Unicast Packets |1 packets

The command completed successfully.

The server, everytime I try a connection, spits out:
eth0: must be stopped to change its MTU

However, my internet data still doesnt go through the vpn.
Any help is appreciated, as obvious I am just trying to get this to work without too much technical knowledge although I have read through many of the manual pages on softether.
best,
tnt

6. I test both within and outside the lan. There is a NAT firewall, the corresponding ports are open
7. I use localbridge between the virtual hub and the eth0 device now
8. I am not sure which of that data is confidential, maybe we can try without first?

Does your VPN network works? After your linux client connect to VPN does it gets IP settings by dhcp or you use manually settings?

Thanks for looking into this.

The vpn connects, but my ip doesnt change.
I try to use VirtualDHCP but it seems here is a problem:
DHCP table is empty.

How do I need to set it?
I am behind a router (e.g. 192.168.1.1),
and vpn server on 192.168.1.2

I left gateway, dns server and domain empty.
Connection is established. afterwards, on the vpn device, I have no inet address, just an inet6 address.
I think my router doesnt do inet6.

In linux after you connect to VPN, client do nothing. You have to run (or make a script) dhcp by our self ( #dhpclient vpn_myadapter ). Or add settings manually.

Does your network router provide a DHCP function?
If so, you don't need to use virtual DHCP.

Greeting, i had similar issue where the vpn is "seem" connected but the server dont update my client ip.
my solution is change the option in secure NAT:
*get a gui server manager borrow a friend windows pc*
(1)default ip address,(2)default distributed ip address,(3)default gateway adreess,(4)default dns server address to something else.
****default should be 192.168.20.X , so i change to something else like 192.168.2.X****
after changing, the server immediately issue and update my client ip and running whatmyip or speedtest will yield remote server ip. :-)

Just change third octet of the ip to something that is 'non-default'

My router does provide IPv4 DHCP function. But I don't get an IP. I reinstalled everything and in fact my cell phone now gets ip reassigned, but my ubuntu laptop doesnt. I guess this has to do with routing tables, Which I am unfamiliar with. Too bad Softether doesn't provide automatic updating for routing tables, for me this is very complex. maybe I will try to use an openvpn client next.

Thanks, Do you mean to change all of those? do you change the value to the same as your server subnetwork is on? is the gateway of server address the local router address or separate from this? I tried some values, but none gave me the expected rerouting.

Did your Ubuntu get IP address from DHCP after connecting VPN?

If it failed, try to configure IP address manually.
