Only want specific traffic through VPN

Post by novumav » Sat Sep 28, 2013 2:36 pm

Hi.

I'm using Softether to connect my computers to my Windows 7 machine which I am using as a server for a database using SQL and some files.

I only want the traffic for the database and the files to go through the VPN. I don't want general internet traffic (i.e. from browsers, emails etc) to use the VPN.

is there a way of doing this? Am I just being stupid and missed the button to press?

Help appreciated already!

Simon

I would use "Access List"
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

.. or you can use Windows Firewall. Didn't you know Windows has built-in firewall?

Thanks for this when you say I can use Windows firewall what do you mean? How do I tell it to only send certain requests through the vpn?

I had the same problem that clients where using the VPN gateway for internet traffic. Sometimes that is desired, sometimes not.
You can in fact steer this by setting the gateway metric on the VPN client network adapter to 'automatic'. It is installed by softether with metric 1 which causes the adapter gateway to have the highest priority.
Sometimes you have to restart the client machine after this change, but I don't know why.

You can check the result by issueing a cmd / route print.
The gateway entries start with 0.0.0.0
The VPN gateway should have a higher metric then the network interface gateway.
