Disappearing config - MAC OS 10.9

Bangkok has been subject to enormous anti-government demonstrations over the last week. On Friday, either “the mob” or inside supporters at Thailand’s two biggest ISPs and International Internet Gateways (TOT and CAT), of nine IIGs in total, pulled the plug, resulting in no Internet for 48 hours.

In Mavericks, at least, when the router is reset, the VPN configuration simply disappears from Network Preferences. (Remember to tick the box, “Send all traffic over VPN” and enter your preferred DNS when you set up your VPN config again.)

Not only is the DNS box blank, but router crashes also delete the DNS from WiFi and Ethernet settings in Network Prefs.

I still cannot realise what "router" you mean. In Mac OS there is no router. Can you give a screenshot of that "router"?

It's a box from my ISP. The router is Huawei and the modem is Linksys, I believe.

Here in the third world, we have frequent power cuts; sometimes this requires resting the modem & router, then turning it back on. Sometimes this is not enough and an ISP tech must manually reset or reconfigure it.

However, our ISP seems to reset its system every month, too, and often the modem & router are hung enough after that it requires an ISP tech to visit.

This is an observation, not even strong enough to be called a quibble and in no way a complaint. I doubt there is a way to make the VPN settings 'sticky' like WiFi settings. In any case, it's good practice!

OK, next.
What does this mean "the VPN configuration simply disappears from Network Preferences."?
What "Network Preferences"?

Trust me, in IT nothing simply disappears :) Everything is logged.

Even I get the joke!

System Preferences/Network shows a column at left with the computer's connection: WiFi, Ethernet, etc., with VPN last (in my case, (L2TP) 5).

That setting simply vanishes when the box hangs.

Yep. Happened three times now since I set up VPNGate.

WiFi doesn't disappear but the DNS servers do.

VPNGate on Mac? How? There is no version for Mac. You have to show me screenshots!!! Please!!! )))
Last time we troubleshooted your Mac, you use L2TP. What VPNGate????

Maybe my problem is the terminology. I use the SoftEther software to connect to VPNGate (right?). This is what you talked me through (I think). (I use these terms because they're VPN Gate Relay Servers.) I actually think we're on the same page; I just don't know enough yet to be specific!

You use LT2P protocol and Mac OS (built-in client) to connect.
You use VPN Gate Servers to connect to.
Thus your problem is Mac OS settings and not the SoftEther.

Yes, the anomaly is in Mac OS.
