Mac connection problems with Win7

Post by fitz2510 » Wed Feb 05, 2014 4:06 pm

I have the Softether server set up on a Win7 desktop computer on a home network. The router is a Linksys E4200 and is set to allow IPSec, PPTP and L2TP pass through. I am the only user of Softether in my home.

I have the Softether client set up on a Win7 laptop. All is well...the laptop connects fine with the desktop.

I also have a Macbook Air running OSX 10.9.1. I have configured the VPN connection as outlined in these forums and I've tried many configurations but I cannot get the Mac to connect with the desktop. I keep getting the error message " The L2TP-VPN server did not respond".

I've been working on this for days and I'm kinda at a loss on what to do next. I'm experienced on Windows machines but new at using Macs. I'm also an old guy so be gentle.

Thanks in advance.

do you have set up the portforwardings to your desktop? UDP 500 and UDP 4500. The "passthrough" settings are for outgoing traffic, so your "desktop" can connect to a IPsec server outsite of your network. Not for incomming vpn connections.

Alternative: Try OpenVPN. It need just one port forwardet....IPsec is a bit more complex.

Thanks for the answer. I have not set up forwarding because the Win7 laptop connects fine with out it. I may have to try Open VPN.
