Help: Error Code 2
Originally posted in the VPN Gate Discussion forum, but since nobody helped me there I'll post things here instead and see how they go.
Hi, I am running the latest version of SoftEther VPN Client on my Windows 8 PC. It was working fine until about a week ago when I started getting an error saying this:
"Error (Error Code 2):
Protocol error occurred. Error was returned from the destination server."
I have ran the application as an administrator and I still get the error. I have tried allowing SoftEther access to port 443 in my firewall settings and I still get the error. I have tried reinstalling and I still get the error.
I checked my network activity in Kaspersky and closed all applications using port 443 other than SoftEther (in this case, I closed Skype, LINE, Flash, and FireFox). I still got the error.
The only thing that seems to allow me to connect to a VPN is using UDP instead of TCP, and even that only allows the connection to last 5 minutes before I am suddenly disconnected for no apparent reason at all.
At this point I am at a loss, I don't know what else to try. Could anybody help me?
Required Info:
OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit
SoftEther version 4.1 build 9473
I do have a firewall, but I've done everything I can think of for changing the rules to allow connections through (though it was that way in the first place) and it still did not work.
not using SecureNAT (to my knowledge anyway)
Can't find vpn_server.config or vpn_bridge.config, maybe because I'm only using the client and not the server?
Using VPNGate plugin for all connections.

Unfortunately it was only another temporary fix. It worked for all of 2 days, but it doesn't work anymore.
Getting the same error again.
"Error (Error Code 2):
Protocol error occurred. Error was returned from the destination server."
Anybody got any other suggestions?

Is nobody able to help me? Am I just not going to be able to use SoftEther on that computer anymore?
The UDP workaround doesn't work anymore so I'm kinda getting desperate.

Did you use SoftEther in China?

Nope, using it in the United States.
Updating to the latest build (9505) fixed the issue, but again it was only temporary.
Now, the error I get depends on the server.
On some servers, I get error code 2.
On other servers, I get error code 13.
If I get lucky, I can connect to a server, but that can sometimes take upwards to about 30 mins to 1 hour (there are so many servers I can't connect to that it's like looking for a needle in a haystack).
Is there no solution to this problem?

Could you try to change network environment?
It seems caused by firewall.

I'm not sure what you want me to change, I've checked and rechecked my firewall and it should be set to allow SoftEther connections.

I guess your ISP drops your VPN packets.
Is there any idea?

Yup, checked and confirmed I'm logged-in as admin.
Are there any other settings in Windows 8 to enable access?

Re: Help: Error Code 2
Hi, I have recently installed the SoftEther Client on a second PC I own and I have run into the same problem. I have reinstalled the client and the virtual-Adapter driver many time and have come to the same state you guys seem to be in. The Irony is though that I use external wireless USB adapters for my internet and The first PC works without problems. Using the same adapter on the second PC leaves me with "error code 2".
Yes, I have the same situation that if i switch to UDP, it works.(second PC).
Yet, the error code might appear on most servers I have tried, there are some servers that have worked. (some in France for example) I am not sure how to analyze the difference between the servers or find out the difference between the 2 PC for i have tried all I know already. It feel like the solution is in front of me because I have the working version to my left and the not working version to my right. If I knew more about networking I might have a solution. Yet right now I am asking for help. If there are any ideas on what to test next. Please notify me.
Thanks
Mabe we can get this thing solved ;)
