I'm using the latest SoftEther VPN software for the server and VPN client, all on Windows 7 64-bit machines.
Topology:
[PC w/SoftEther VPN Server] - [Linksys Router] - {Cloud} - [Linksys Router] - [Client PC w/SoftEther VPN Client]
I have turned off both firewalls on each PC. I tried port-forwarding 443 and 5555, even though this shouldn't be needed w/NAT-T. I can ping across to the cloud using the public IPs which reside on the routers. I have verified that the dynamic-DNS resolution is working as expected. I'm just using a local user/pass for auth.
I cannot figure out why I keep getting the following error msg:
Error (Error Code 2):
Protocol error occurred. Error was returned from the destination server.
Seems like I'm missing something fundamental but cannot figure out what.
Is there a debug or log I can check to figure out what it doesn't like?
Please help!
Help! Keep getting 'Error Code 2: Protocol error occurred. '

Re: Help! Keep getting 'Error Code 2: Protocol error occurre
So I just tried VPN Azure and it fired right up.
Now I am using a PC that has some McAfee crap on it, that I *assumed* was strictly spyware but now I am wondering...
If VPN Azure 'fixed' my issue, does that simply mean that the communication was not getting through from my client to the server? I had setup manual port forwarding so I really don't think it's NAT.
Please chime in so I feel less crazy...been staring at the screen for too long now lol.
Cheers.

If you want a direct connection, then you do indeed need a forwarded port on the server side.

PC firewalls interfere with SoftEther. Temporarily disable the firewall to troubleshoot server problems.

It means that both ends of the connection are initiating an outbound connection to the VPN Azure service, which avoids most firewall or port forwarding misconfigurations.
