Installation of the Adapter device driver failed.

Post by Requiem » Mon Oct 27, 2014 5:47 pm

ok, so I would make it detailed.

I had been using this software for months and never a problem occurred.
I'm using Window 8.1 Single Language on a x64 operating system.

The problem came suddenly as one day when I tried to connect to the VPN server
The error (Code 2: Protocol error) occurred. There wasn't solution online so I consulted my friend and he suggested that deleting the VPN's Virtual Network Adapter as well as uninstalling the whole VPN software and reinstall it again, letting the software itself to regenerate everything would work.

I tried it, at first I couldn't delete the Adapter in Network and Sharing center as the option was greyed out
So I headed to Device manager (as my friend suggested), located the Adapter and deleted it off (along with software, I ticked that option) and I reinstalled it. Restarted laptop, restarted modem. Even used CCleaner to look for remaining cache and swept it away.

Installed it and once I connected, it requires installation of new Adapter, clicking OK leads to the loading screen a while and it disappears, showing an OFFLINE connection to the selected VPN server and installing the Adapter manually brings me an error "Installation of the Virtual Network Adapter device driver failed."

I had disabled the whole AVG internet security, run the software in Administrator mode (As in right click>Run as admin), installed the software on another HDD, picked older version and the latest version released today, waited few days and retried, picked other internet connection, installed it through Device Manager > Add a legacy device, the same error came.

P/S The "Add a Legacy software device" led me to Network Adapter and located Softether VPN and surprisingly there were 3 VPN adapters in the list which none of them could perform successful installation as the error prompts "Invalid Access to Memory".

P/P/S this is connecting from Malaysia.

So... What to do ... ?

Nobody has a solution?

Any kind of solution you can give?
Just any. The problem lingers until today :(

I had uninstalled AVG, disabled Window's firewall too but no luck...

Unfortunately, the operating system on this computer may have been damaged by bad advice.

Such error messages are often temporary. The first troubleshooting steps should have been:

1. Read the logs.
2. Verify that the server is still running
3. And accessible from a different computer.

So what should I do now? Temporarily? So I should uninstall the software and wait for a long time? Till when? If so.

Uninstalling the software temporarily and wait for however due time won't necessarily solve the problem you have on hand. The problem doesn't necessarily require time waiting before it will sort itself out. It is more like a more permanent that requires user intervention or nothing is going to happen even if you wait for however long it may take.

Your best bet is to seek expert device offline as to try and sought out the issues with your computer. At this point in time I believe the VPN drivers are in you windows driver cache and hence that is why you may be facing issues with invalid access to memory. If the old VPN drivers are in your windows driver cache, you will need to delete them and ensure that they will not reappear. Deleting the drivers alone does not do anything as windows by default caches newly installed drivers for unknown hardware regardless is physical or virtual.

I am unsure personally of any other issues you may have on your computer. Though you are best to seek a proper computer guy who knows his or her stuff and is able to fix up at least the issue I mentioned above. That in theory should for starters prevents windows showing up old VPN adapters and that it is able to accept new VPN adapters. I also want to point out that fixing the issue I mentioned above does not necessarily mean that your issues are resolved, again there could be many other issues floating around.

The simplest and virtually foolproof solution would be to back up your important data, reinstall and resetup your computer. It is also the most annoying procedure if you are unfamiliar with it but unless you seek offline professional help there is no other way.

:( .... If that's the case, will CCleaner work? If I kinda tick some options there...

I think re-installing of the OS is best way to solve.
