VPN Server does not start on Ubuntu

Hello,

I followed this tutorial: http://www.softether.org/4-docs/1-manua ... igurations

And when I try to start it, under "7.3.9", nothing happens. Terminal says "no such file or directory" and clicking the icon doesn't produce anything either.

I don't want to register it as a start up script, because I only want to use this for a browser game that exists only in Japan. I don't need this for when I'm doing everything else I normally do. So, I prefer the starting and stopping when I want to.

PC info:
Asus G51VX
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
64-bit
SoftEther VPN Server (Ver 4.14, Build 9529, beta)

What icon are you trying click?
The section 7.3.9 which you are referring to does use a startup script to facilitate the starting and stopping of the service. For this to work it does indeed have to be installed in /etc/init.d, and judging by the error you are receiving, you haven't installed it.
The easiest thing is to follow the guide throughly and install the startup script. Just installing such a script does not necessarily mean that the service will be started automatically when the computer boots. You could modify the runlevels on which the script is run automatically, to remove any automatic operation, so that you could only start the service manually using the commands provided in the guide.

Ah okay. Thats probably the problem then. It made it sound like that was optional and started the program on start up. I will try that then, thank you!

Alright, that worked, and now that I got the script running. How do I use the actual program to connect to a Japanese server?

The tutorial mentions nothing of it.

Alright, so from what I gathered from researching the little of whats actually out there. The next step is to create a server using option 1 of ./vpncmd and use ServerPasswordSet to create the password. However, when I use option 1, press Enter twice, as a few tutorials are telling me, I am getting and error saying
"Error occurred. (Error code: 1)
Connection to the server failed. Check network connection and make sure that address and port number of destination server are correct."

Now this whole thing seems out of my control. There shouldn't be anything wrong with the connection, router, ISP or anything crazy like that. VPN Gate works perfectly on Windows XP (which is dual booted with Ubuntu here).

You have installed the server part of the SoftEther, evident by the name of your thread, the documentation section that you have linked and some other things. This creates a VPN server on your computer. It does not connect to any other servers, in Japan or anywhere else, it opens ports and accepts connections from clients.

If what you are looking for is to connect to an external VPN service, as a client, then you should install and use SoftEther client, it's another file download, and it has of course other options than the server itself. The documentation explains the process relatively well: https://www.softether.org/4-docs/1-manu ... ent_Manual

Additionally if you want to make the installation of either a server or a client in an easier manner, I highly recommend using the visual configuration utility to configure everything. It is provided by SoftEther, but works only on Windows. But seriously, even if you don't have windows available, it might be even easier to install it quickly in a virtual machine to configure.

Windows is only required for the visual configuration utility. It can configure a server or a client on any other machine, even linux. So the client can be on linux, and the config util would just connect to it using the network, just to configure it.
