IP Lookup Shows my Initiating ISP

Mac Os 10.8.5
Connected using L2TP/IPsec through my Network Preferences. (with several different servers in several different countries)
All seemed to go well, and I managed some connections and downloads I wanted.
Out of curiosity, I used whatismyipaddress.com
I was horrified to discover that it shows my own initial ISP. Somehow despite appearing to be connected and everything going through the L2TP vpn, that showed up!
I assume I can expect some forwarded emails about acquiring some unapproved downloads (had a couple in the past before trying vpn)
I'm horrified and flabbergasted. What can I do to ensure my connection really is hidden?
