VPN Setup for Linux

Post by ak2766 » Sat Dec 05, 2015 2:43 am

Hi there.

I find it odd that this is an Opensource project and yet when I went looking for instructions on how to set up L2TP client on Linux, I found no documentation on your site, yet there's documentation for Android, iP..., Mac, and Windows. Is it just me or is it plain unfair not to have instructions for Linux clients?

I use Linux (Ubuntu 15.10 to be specific) at home and at the office and had to go digging elsewhere to setup L2TP client on my own. Given that Ubuntu 15.10 dropped L2TP, I had to setup OpenVPN server in addition to L2TP server then configured OpenVPN client on my laptop.

I understand that there are multitudes of distributions when it comes to Linux, but you can at least target the most popular distribution (currently Mint - http://www.distrowatch.com) for other Linux users to use as a guide!

Anyway, enough ranting, there's work to be done.

ak.

I have similar feelings on this topic. Linux instructions would be nice if the founders could centralize it in one special document.

Does this help? Not much to go on.
http://www.softether-download.com/en.aspx you can download a linux client
http://www.softether.org/5-download/src/2.unix
http://www.softether.org/4-docs/1-manua ... quirements

4.1.2 Linux Support
SoftEther VPN Client also operates on platforms with Linux kernel 2.4 or later. However, the Linux version of VPN Client has numerous limitations, and currently it cannot be operated using a GUI. Therefore, the Linux version of VPN Client is recommended for use only by users with a very strong understanding of the Linux operating system and networks.
When using a Linux server to configure a connection between bases or a remote access VPN, normally this can be achieved using the local bridge functions of the Linux version of VPN Server, and the Linux version of VPN Client does not need to be used.

Then section 4.14 has these comments
SoftEther VPN Project provides a Linux version of VPN Client, but it does not provide support for proper operations of this version of the software product.
To operate the Linux version of VPN Client, the Universal TUN/TAP device driver module must be embedded in the kernel. For details, please refer to http://vtun.sourceforge.net/tun/.
The Linux version of VPN Client does not have a function for automatically rewriting the routing table. To set the tap device connected to the VPN as the default gateway, you may need to manually connect the static route to the VPN server.
To use the tap device created with the Linux version of VPN Client as a DHCP client device, you must properly set the DHCP client daemon.

There does seem to be additional linux input in 5.1.2 and 5.2.1:
http://www.softether.org/4-docs/1-manua ... quirements

http://www.softether.org/4-docs/1-manua ... ting_Modes

Lastly these seem to be linux server install instructions but there may be something of value there that could crossover.
