Best way to update new version on Linux

Post by CSM » Fri Mar 18, 2016 1:10 am

What is best way to update to the latest Softether version on Linux? I extracted the directory and moved directory to /usr/local, but I deleted the config file by accident when removing old files to delete the old directory. Is there an easy way to just update to latest version and replace the needed files?

Build a SoftEther on download directory.
After that copy all executable file and hamcore.se2 to directory to be installed (/usr/local/???).

Hi thisjun.

Can you just clarify that a bit... Are you saying to build the new version (like a fresh install) in a separate directory and then copy the new executables & hamcore.se2 over the existing files, replacing them?

Is that all? All of the existing config, etc will be preserved? I assume it will then need a restart.

It would be nice if the update functionality was "built in" to the server and client packages. The server side I should be able to manage if the above is all that's required, but I can guess that making uneducated users select the right package from the web site and then download/install it is going to cause me a lot of headaches.

Thanks,
Ray

update: I took a punt and upgraded the Linux server as per above, and it seems to have worked fine :)

Basically, I just stopped the daemon, ran make on the new install files in my Downloads directory, then copied the vpnserver & vpncmd executables, plus the hamcore.se2 file to the current installation directory (/usr/local/vpnserver) the re-started the daemon. All went without a hitch and only took about 5 minutes.

1. Build SoftEther in a separate directory
2. Stop the SoftEther daemon
3. Overwrite old executables & hamcore.se2
4. Start the SoftEther daemon

I tried what I think you are describing, but it reset all my settings. How can I update the files, but make sure I keep all my settings. What is the easiest way to do this?

I upgrade my server by following the procedure on this web

http://wp.secretnest.info/archives/1529

Because it does not mention the hamcore.se2, are there any missing procedures?

What is hamcore.se2 and how to handle it?

Did you delete any file or directory?

That tutorial suggest to copy all files that include hamcore.se2.
