Cannot see IP of server computer when connected on VPN

I have set up a VPN server on a Netgear NAS (running Linux) behind a home router and connected to it successfully via the client and L2TP, both from a Windows 10 Pro computer.
I can 'see' and access all the other devices on the remote network. However I cannot access the device that the VPN is on.
For example: I can SSH to it remotely without the VPN, but I cannot connect to it over the VPN as if I am local. (I can connect to it via SSH if I am physically on the LAN)
While remote over the VPN the IP address of the NAS does not return a ping, while other devices do.
It looks as though the VPN is unable to connect to the device serving the VPN. Is this a result of something I have not setup correctly or is it intrinsic to the way SoftEther VPN works? (I have OpenVPN servers at other locations and they allow me to access the device running the OpenVPN server.)
