Softether sometimes stops working

Post by Svadilfari » Thu Mar 31, 2022 7:07 am

Hi!
I have a softether l2tp setup with a local bridge. There is around 10-15 simultaneous users. Sometimes softether stops working, the service is still running but all the users are thrown out and unable to connect again. If i restart the softether-vpnserver service it starts to work again.
Nothing of relevance is shown in the logs, actually nothing at all except the last connected users and stuff like that. and this i think is the real problem.

Is there any way to troubleshoot this, verbose logging or something like that? because it is impossible to find the problem without have any kind of feedback. :(
Apparently the problem is related to the softether-vpnserver service because it starts to work again when i restart it.

Help with ways to troubleshoot this is appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Tomas

I can't help you on this but from my experience I can feel softether's L2TP support is not stable too.
Try other protocols.

softether is multi-protocol software. Use anything other than L2TP.

Would MS-SSTP be considered stable?

That means i would have to open tcp/443 for internet access, which also means that the server management part would be reachable over internet. Is there any way to lock down management access for a specified IP range?

Found the answer to my own question, apparently you must create a text file named adminip.txt and put it in the same location as the executable.
It should contain the relevant IP adresses.
