L2TP-VPN server did not respond

Post by Halobiont » Tue Mar 14, 2023 6:26 pm

Hi,

I've tried a hundred times but cannot get the vpn to connect on ios.

What I see on IOS

Type: L2TP
Description: Name I make up
Server: My DDNS Hostname
Account: User I created in my virtual hub
RSA SecurID: Off
Password: Passord I used with the user on my virtual hub
Secret: Secret entered on the L2TP window
Send All Traffic: On

Triple checked the password and secret.
Using Starlink if that matters

Thanks for your help.

1, What is the error you get?
2. At server side, have you enabled SecureNAT or have you Bridged the hub?

1. LT2P-VPN server did not respond. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Adminsitrator.
2. Yes and yes.

take some steps to get closer to the issue

1. contact your ISP if L2TP is allowed or has bee blocked
2. from your network check if you can reach to the server IP
3. from your network trace-router is there any packet loss , +10% causes some issue for VPN clients
4. check if ports for L2TP are open
- 500
- 4500
- 1701
5. check if your SE server is listening on IPv4 (something it just listens to IPv6 and when you configure the client using IPv4 it cannot connect)

One of these could be the main issue

Thank you for helping.

I can ping the server but cannot open any ports through my ISP.
The ISP is Starlink (cgnat) which does not allow port forwarding and is why I'm trying to use SoftEther.

I made sure those ports are on the TCP/IP port list but it's still not working.

I think I'm listening to IPV4 but I'm having trouble finding that setting.

1. check packet loss , there should not be any or could be a little not so much
2. go to your server (SSH or RDP) and see (with cmd on Windows or a terminal on LInux)

Hello,
Did you manage to make this work ?
I'm trying to set up a VPN with SoftEther at my office and I'm also using Starlink and I have no accessible public Ip address (CGNAT).
I'm trying to connect to my office PC from my mac or iOS.
I activated L2TP on my server but it's not working.I enabled SecureNAT as well.
I'm not sure I understand how my client is supposed to connect to my server with my Dynamic DNS address if my server is behind CGNAT.
Do I configure my VPN L2tp client same as if my server was able to be reached with a public IP ?

Please help.

If your office SoftEther server is on Starlink network, and you have no intention of creating a cloud VPN gateway with a public IP, then install SSTP Connect on your Mac and use the VPN Azure address offered by your server.

Thank you for your answer @solo
I managed to make it work with the SSTP Connect app and VPN Azure but the connection is very unstable unfortunately.
Do you have any cloud VPN gateway service you can suggest ?
And how would that work ? The service would get me a public IP, and then is there a configuration on SoftEther to add this service ?
Thank you

For best performance and stability look for a regional cloud provider.
One of our regular users wrote about it recently https://www.vpnusers.com/viewtopic.php? ... 180#p98572
Next, install SoftEther server there, something like https://www.vpnusers.com/viewtopic.php? ... 157#p98420
