Hi,
Is there any way to configure Windows Phone to connect a SoftEther VPN Server? I enabled everything in the router, enabled L2TP on VPN Server but it does not work. I tried with Automatic on my phone as well as all other options.
I can connect from my Windows PC with SoftEther Client.

Did you configure port forwarding UDP/4500 and UDP/500 to the VPN Server?

Did you try Android or iOS to connect the server?

The port forwarding solved the problem, thank you! I didn't find this information. Maybe it can be on one of these sites:

Hi,

When you said port forwarding solved the problem, does that mean you are now successfully able to use your windows phone to remotely access your home network ?

If so, is the port forwarding used in a way that is secure as I have heard that port forwarding is usually not secure ?

Should your solution work with our phones, router, and ip cam listed below ?

Windows Phones:  Nokia Lumia 1520 and Microsoft Lumia 640 LTE (both running Windows mobile 8.1 with vpn client "L2TP over IPsec")

I'm having a similar problem, where do you get the specific info you need to configure port forwarding UDP/4500 and UDP/500 to the VPN Server ?

It's router setting.
Your acccess router may have NAT function.
Port-forwarding allows the router to redirect specific traffic into your PC.
Please read the router manual for detail operation.

My problem is the router manual seems to assume I know what values to input, but I am new at this and it's a guessing game, the values I tried obviously were not right somehow.

The port forwarding section has the following fields to fill in and I'm guessing what to put in each one and the only one I am sure of is the Protocol being UDP.   I'm not sure if the "Local IP" means the IP of my computer or the IP of the windows phone I am trying to connect with.

Service name:

Source target:

Port range:

Local IP:

Local port:

Protocol:

When you forward a port you have to specify the external port (this is the port of your router on the internet side) a local ip and a local port (this is the computer and its port where the router should forward the data coming from outside (internet) ). Beside them you should add a name for indentify for yourself. Protocol is usually TCP/UDP.

In your case I have no idea what source target is. Port range may be your external port, local ip and address is the same I wrote above.

Thanks for the reply and idea, I found what I had wrong from an ip camera forum, I had some settings wrong and/or omitted both in Softether and my router settings, and my windows firewall was blocking the connection too, got it working now. And I found out the port I had to forward was the one that comes up for ipv4 on the computer hardwired to my router.

The OpenVPN would have been an easy solution, but Windows phones don't have an OpenVPN client, but an L2TP/IPsec client, hence the need for using the free open source Softether VPN server software on my computer.

Great, I am glad, I know this stuff can be frustrating to figure out sometimes, I had to do weeks of research and asking questions and if this info can save anyone else some time figuring it out that is good !
