Windows Server Memory Usage
Hi,
We are using softether verision 4.38 as a vpn server with L2TP. We are using sercure NAT because of DHCP, but still softether service is increasing memory usage even for 10GB and more. What should we check?
Kind Regards

Re: Windows Server Memory Usage
My SE server in bridged mode and 1 client, mem:
You could bridge it too, disable SecureNAT and use "Open DHCP Server" on Windows (dnsmasq on Linux).
Code: Select all
Image Name PID Session Name Session# Mem Usage
========================= ====== ================ ======== ============
vpnclient.exe 1372 0 20,496 K
vpncmgr.exe 1396 0 22,072 K
vpnclient.exe 1808 0 31,488 K
vpnserver.exe 1900 0 17,408 K

Hi solo,
thanks for reply
that means it is a known issue with memory and SecureNAT? It was investigated in the past somehow? Do You know what is the cause?
Kind Regards

Re: Windows Server Memory Usage
Hello, I did not imply that, however bridging delivers better throughput. As for memory usage, reboot the server and compare the output of "tasklist" with and without users.

Re: Windows Server Memory Usage
Hi,
Sorry for late post. You mean to start server and disconnect cable? I think You have right memory pumping is synced with data transfer. If it will be no memory pumping without users what then?
Maybe it is because I have client and server on same system?
Kind Regards

Re: Windows Server Memory Usage
Hi,
I tried to make new clean windows installation with same hub. Same situation, server is pumping up memory. When no client is connected then everything is ok.
What I saw that I get information (warning) about too big packets, but it is only warning.
Kind Regards

Re: Windows Server Memory Usage
Hi Solo,
I tried with disabled SecureNAT and with Windows Server DHCP feature. So far no memory problem. I will give You info after few days. Also CPU utilization is very low now.

Hello Przemek, this is good news for your VPN, but not so good for SecureNAT's reputation though if both Windows and Linux are affected. Please report it anyway and keep us updated as it is a very interesting issue.

Re: Windows Server Memory Usage
Hi Solo,
Chcecked after few days and now I can see that is about 40MB / day more. So today it is about 300MB yesterday was 260MB. So maybe situation is very similar but without NAT there is less to store in memory?
What else I can check? Maybe it is because I'm usint L2TP?
Kind Regards
