Is it safe to visit HTTPS website via a VPN server?

Is it possible that the VPN server intercepts and manages to understand the contents of my Gmail inbox (https://mail.google.com) , for example?

First of all I would think about your ISP and the last thing I would is the VPN server :)

If certification of the web site is OK, HTTPS is safe as normal internet connection.
